I. AWARDS DEFINITIONS
1. The GIAMA Awards of Merit shall be awarded annually and will recognize outstanding performances and achievements in theatrically released motion pictures in the African industry.
2. The awards of Merit shall be in presented in the form of a gold plaque with an imprint of GIAMA on the statuette, and will be provided for the following achievements:
II. CATEGORY LIST/DESCRIPTION
1. BEST MOTION PICTURE:
- This merit shall be judged and awarded based on the overall presentation of the film.
- More specifically, it shall be based on the visual quality, transition, sound editing, and mixing of the film.
- The type of camera and audio recording equipment used will also be considered as well as the amount of light and exposure derived from on-set.
2. BEST ACTOR
- This merit shall be awarded based on the performance of an actor in a leading role.
- The nomination process shall consider several key performance indicators, including but not limited to: body language and display of emotions with an emphasis on the delivery of his lines.
3. BEST ACTRESS
- This merit shall be awarded based on the performance of an actress in a leading role.
- The nomination process shall consider several key performance indicators, including but not limited to: body language and display of emotions with an emphasis on the delivery of her lines.
4. BEST NEW ACTOR
- This merit shall be awarded based on the performance of a new actor in a leading role.
- To qualify, the actor would have featured in a solid, A-list production, major film within his debut year as a lead actor.
- The nomination process shall consider several key performance indicators, including but not limited to: body language and display of emotions with an emphasis on the delivery of his lines.
- Able to naturally portray said character.
5. BEST NEW ACTRESS
- This merit shall be awarded based on the performance of a new actor in a leading role.
- To qualify, the actress would have been featured in a solid, A-list production, major film within the first 1 year of officially coming out as an actress.
- The nomination process will consider several key performance indicators, including but not limited to: body language and display of emotions with an emphasis on the delivery of her lines.
- Able to naturally portray said character.
6. BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY (Best Script)
- This merit shall be awarded based on the quality of the storyline, the dialogue, and originality of the script.
7. BEST INDIGENOUS FILM (Native Language)
- This merit shall be awarded based on the overall performance of the actors, the dialogues, and the script.
- A native language film is defined as a movie that was produced in a predominantly non-English dialogue sequence.
8. BEST SUPPORTING ATCOR
- This merit shall be awarded based on the performance of the actor in a supporting role.
- The nomination process shall consider several key performance indicators, including but not limited to: body language and display of emotions with an emphasis on the delivery of his lines.
- Able to naturally portray said character.
9. BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
- This merit shall be awarded based on the performance of the actress in a supporting role.
- The nomination process shall consider several key performance indicators, including but not limited to: body language and display of emotions with an emphasis on the delivery of her lines.
- Able to naturally portray said character.
10. BEST FILM (Comedy)
- This merit shall be awarded based on the overall performance of the actors, the dialogue of the screenplay, picture quality, sound effects, and the humor of the storyline (script).
11. BEST FILM (Drama)
- This merit shall be awarded based on the overall performance of the actors, the dialogue of the screenplay, picture quality, sound effects, and the storyline (script).
12. BEST FILM DIRECTOR
- This merit shall be awarded based on the angle and shots captured.
- The overall sequence, depiction of a storyline.
13. BEST FILM PRODUCER
- This merit shall be awarded based on the quality of the production.
14. GIAMA LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
- This merit shall be awarded based on an all-time achievement status; meaning this individual including (Actors, Actress, Directors, Producers, Executive Producers, Production house, Writer, etc), must have had a thoroughly positive impact on the African movie industry.
- This award shall be given to the individual who has made an exceptional contribution to the motion picture for which it was created, but for which there is no annual award category.
- Nominations for the Special Achievement Award shall be made at a special meeting of the Board of Governors upon recommendation.
15. GIAMA IMAGE AWARD
- This merit shall be awarded based on an individual’s image off screen.
- He or she must have been able to keep his family together, (depict an off screen image of a good citizen in the community, bearing in mind the responsibilities associated with being a recognizable public figure and a role model.) Considering all the odds in the movie industry.
- He or She would have shown or been a great example as to how one can balance this public life with the family lifestyle.
16. GIAMA HUMANITARIAN AWARD (Actor/Actress)
- This merit shall be awarded based on the humanitarian achievements of an artist.
- The artist must have made verifiable and laudable contributions to the community through their individual non-for-profit organization or foundation and/or other form of charitable activities within their community.
17. GIAMA HEROES AWARD (Professional Athlete)
- This merit shall be awarded based on the humanitarian achievements of a professional athlete.
- This athlete shall be considered due to the impact of their foundation/ charitable contributions to their community.
18. BEST MALE ACT (Viewers’ Choice)
- This merit shall be awarded based on the male nominee with the highest number of votes, which shall be based on an online voting.
19. BEST FEMALE ACT (Viewers’ Choice)
- This merit shall be awarded based on the female nominee with the highest number of votes, which shall be based on an online voting.
20. BEST COSTUME
- This merit shall be awarded based on the best costume presentation in a specific movie.
21. BEST MALE ACT (Nollywood-USA)
- This merit shall be awarded based on the performance of the actor in a leading role.
- The nomination process shall consider several key performance indicators, including but not limited to: body language and display of emotions with an emphasis on the delivery of his lines.
- Able to naturally portray said character.
- Only African movies that were shot in the United States, Canada, or the U.K are being considered in this category.
22. BEST FEMALE ACT (Nollywood-USA)
- This merit shall be awarded based on the performance of the actress in a leading role.
- The nomination process shall consider several key performance indicators, including but not limited to: body language and display of emotions with an emphasis on the delivery of her lines.
- Able to naturally portray said character.
- Only African movies that were shot in the United States, Canada, or the U.K are being considered in this category.
23. BEST NOLLYWOOD-USA FILM
- This merit shall be awarded based on the overall performance of the actors, the dialogue of the screenplay, picture quality, sound effects, and the storyline (script).
24. BEST NOLLYWOOD-USA FILM (Comedy)
- This merit shall be awarded based on the overall performance of the actors, the dialogue of the screenplay, picture quality, sound effects, and the humor of the story (script).
25. BEST MALE ACT (Hollywood Viewers’ Choice)
- This merit shall consider Hollywood actors only for this nomination category.
- This merit shall be awarded based on the male nominee with the highest number of votes, which shall be based on an online voting.
26. BEST FEMALE ACT (Hollywood Viewers’ Choice)
- This merit shall consider Hollywood actors only for this nomination category.
- This merit shall be awarded based on the female nominee with the highest number of votes, which shall be based on an online voting.
III. ELIGIBILITY
Eligibility for GIAMA Awards consideration is subject to following:
1. All eligible motion pictures, unless otherwise stated must be a feature length (defined as over 60 minutes).
2. Eligibility for all awards will first be ascertained by credits as they appear on the screen and/or as certified to the GIAMA organization by the producing companies. Final determination, in any event, will be made by the GIAMA. GIAMA shall not be bound by any contract or agreement relating to the sharing or giving of credit and reserves the right to make its own determination of credit for purposes of award consideration.
3. In the event of any dispute concerning credits, the GIAMA maintains the right to declare any achievement ineligible or, alternatively, to reject all claims to credit, list credits as being in controversy and withhold any award until the dispute is resolved.
IV. DEADLINES
1. All Official Screen Credits forms must be returned to the GIAMA organization by Friday, June 1, 2012.
2. An achievement submitted for GIAMA Awards consideration may not be withdrawn after Friday, March 30, 2012.
